Why should I use FrontPage?
FrontPage has always made it easy for both new
users and Web professionals to create and manage
Websites. The Microsoft FrontPage 2000 editor
lets you create and edit Web pages without having
to know html (Hyper Text Markup Language). The
process is nearly as easy as writing a letter
because the FrontPage editor automatically generates
the right html code behind the scenes for you.

We

your remote site. This allows you to make fast

Important Note:
Always remember to keep local (backup) copies
of your remote Web sites! There is no substitute
for having personal backup copies of important
Website data. In case of disaster recovery (and
we do perform system-wide backups on all Web
servers) there is never a guarantee that your
Website information will be retrieved. There
is also an additional cost associated with performing
a restore due to data loss by the customer.
One more note, keep in mind that using FrontPage
2000 means that FTP should NOT be used. They
both don't interact well with permissions
and simply uploading some files via FTP can
corrupt a working FrontPage installation.
To
save a copy of your Web to your local hard
drive, simply publish the Web to a location
on your hard drive.
- Open
your remote Website location on our Web
servers through FrontPage Explorer.
- Double-click
on the page that you need to edit (this
will open your page in the FrontPage Editor).
- Make
all necessary updates to your page.
- From
the File Menu, select Save.

be relevant. This reset requirement was eliminated
with the FrontPage 2000 server side extensions.

Common FrontPage Error Fixes
Recalculating the links for your site
Recalculating the links for your site directly
on the server is the general fix-all for many
FrontPage errors. Always recalculate the links
every time after you make any changes to your
site. Follow these directions to recalculate
the links for your site:
- Open
your site locally through FrontPage, by
using the "File" pull-down menu, and selecting
"Open Web".

This error occurs when:
- Your
site does not have the FrontPage extensions
installed, or
- You
are not connected to the Internet, or
- You
are not connected via a standard 32-bit
PPP/SLIP connection.
FrontPage will not function properly with some online services like
America Online unless the version you are
using supports 32-bit Internet applications.
Contact your Internet Service Provider to
find out about compatibility with FrontPage
2000.
Table of Contents Web Bot problems (returns hundreds of incorrect links

FP2000:
FrontPage Repeatedly Prompts for User Name
and Password When You
Open a Web (Microsoft Knowledge base article
no. Q250376)
Excerpt from this page:When you try to open
a web with FrontPage 2000, you
are repeatedly prompted for a user name and
password. You also may be
prompted for a user name and password when
you try to save a page that you
are editing.
FP2000:
FrontPage Repeatedly Prompts for User Name
and Password When You
Open a Web
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:
Microsoft
FrontPage 2000
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
SYMPTOMS
When you try to open a web with FrontPage
2000, you are repeatedly prompted
for a user name and password. You also may
be prompted for a user name and
password when you try to save a page that
you are editing.
CAUSE
This problem results from the way that FrontPage
2000 communicates with
Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0.
FrontPage
2000 relies on the proxy settings that are
configured in Internet
Explorer 5.0. In some cases, the proxy settings
are not being detected.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, you must create a
registry key to add the manual
proxy configuration option to FrontPage 2000.
To
create the key, follow these steps:
1. Close all open programs.
2. Click Start and then click Run.
3. In the Open box, type regedit and then
click OK.
4. Move to the following folder:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared
Tools\Web Server Extensions
5. Right-click the Web Server Extensions
folder, point to New, and then click
Key.
6. Name the new key Web Extender Client.
7. Right-click the Web Extender Client folder,
point to New, and then click
DWORD Value.
8. Name the new DWORD Value wecctlflags.
9. Right-click the wecctlflags value, and
then click Modify.
10. Type 2 in the Value data text box.
11. Click OK.
12. Quit the Registry Editor.
Open
FrontPage and then try to open the remote
web.
In
some cases in which Microsoft Internet Explorer
4.0 is installed,
upgrading to Internet Explorer 5.0 fixes the
problem. In other cases in
which Internet Explorer 5.0 is installed,
downgrading to Internet Explorer
4.0 fixes the problem.

Acceptable File Names
To prevent errors, we suggest
naming all files in lowercase. Spaces and
special control characters are generally not
a good idea. The underscore character ("_")
is acceptable and recommended in place of
spaces. You should never use special characters
( ! @ # $ % ^ & * : ' ) in file names.
We suggest that you keep the length of file
names to a minimum. The tilde character (~)
cannot be used in directory or file names.
Notes to Mac Users
Select "raw data" transfer mode
when using Fetch to transfer both cfm and
images. PageMill may add either a .bin or
.txt extension to your files which must be
removed in order for such files to load properly.
